FedEx Racing Team Finishes 23rd in Phoenix

March 16, 2015

Denny Hamlin finished 23rd in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, unable to make up track position during the 312-lap event on the flat, one-mile desert oval, won by Kevin Harvick.

Hamlin battled a tight #11 FedEx Freight Toyota throughout the race, and adjustments on pit road never could bring the car to life. Hamlin restarted 18th with less than 20 laps to go but fell back a handful of spots at the checkered flag.

“We just couldn’t get our car to turn,” said Hamlin, following the race. “It’s certainly a disappointing finish for our FedEx team, but we learned a lot for the fall race here that will be important. We’ll move on from this and get better.”

Hamlin started 25th and ran around that spot for the duration of the race. A pit road penalty during the first stop put him back at the tail end of the field, and with passing at a premium throughout the day, he was unable to make up much ground.

The finish dropped Hamlin five spots to 13th in the NASCAR standings following Phoenix, 74 points behind leader Harvick after four of 26 regular season races. The Series returns to action on Sunday, March 22 at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway.
